Spanish finalists of the BMW Golf Cup International qualify at PGA Catalunya Resort

Jesús Aguinaga, Luis Mena and Patricia Domínguez Arburua were triumphant in their respective categories in the National Final of the BMW Golf Cup International, which took place at the PGA Catalunya Resort. These three players will now represent Spain in the World Final in South Africa.

The BMW Golf Cup International 2012 held its National Final on Saturday 6th October at the PGA Catalunya Resort. Finalists who qualified in 12 local trials held throughout the season across Spain travelled to the resort.

The spectacular “Stadium” golf course at the PGA Catalunya Resort, named best golf course in Spain in the “100 best golf courses where you can play” list in British magazine Golf World, proved to be a difficult test for competitors, none of whom were able to go under the course par.

The winner in the first category was Jesús María Aguinaga, representing Lurauto, from Gipuzkoa, who with a score of 76 strokes was able to beat his closest competitors by four strokes. In the second category, Madrid’s Luis Mena, representing Ibericar Cuzco Motor, did the same and with 75 strokes he also beat his closest competitors by 4 strokes. The most hard-fought of the day was the ladies catgeory, where Patricia Domínguez Arburua achieved a birdie on the 18th to claim victory with the least strokes.

These three players now have the honour of representing Spain in the World Final, taking place in March in South Africa, where they will face winners from the other 45 countries. Three places will be at stake to play the previous Pro-Am at the Open BMW International which will take place in Munich (Germany) during the Summer of 2013.

Dan Konyk wins Spain’s first RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship at PGA Catalunya Resort

Attended by throngs of spectators, PGA Catalunya Resort hosted golf’s big-hitters from across the globe for RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship, including 2010 World Champion Joe Miller, fellow Brit Dan Konyk, Gerrard Pera – the first Spaniard to take part in a World Championship and 2011 Rookie of the year, – and Swedish sensation, Jorgen Trank.

Dan Konyk thundered his way to victory at the number one golf course in Spain with a winning shot of 366 yards, and also strike the longest ball of the day of 417 yards.

Qualifying for a place in the Grand Final in Las Vegas, Dan Konyk also takes home a cheque for €3,000.

Miguel Girbes, Director of Golf at PGA Catalunya Resort and match referee for the special event, said: “Hosting the first World Long Drive Championship in Europe has been a privilege, especially as the event has been extremely well attended.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in the staging of the event including Gerrard Pera, the event sponsors and the PGA Catalunya Resort staff, who have been tirelessly preparing for the tournament.”

Gerrard Pera said: “Playing in front of a home crowd has been very special and I hope the event will become an annual fixture.”

Grand Prix Champion Comes to Maryland

Amicelli, the 17.2h Holsteiner Chestnut gelding from Canada arrived in Clarksburg MD in mid December 2011 to join TeamStrawson. Amicelli’s breeding is from Amigo xx out of Thea by Calypso 3, and was imported from the Holsteiner Elite Auction as a young horse. He has had a stellar career as a Grand Prix competitor throughout Canada and the United States since his debut in 2005, from his Ontario Grand Prix Reserve Championship in 2006, to his second place standing in the 2010 Grand Prix at Dressage at Devon (4th in the Grand Prix Special).

During the 2007-2008 season, Amicelli successfully competed at the Grand Prix level internationally throughout North American CDIs. In 2008, he placed first in the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle at the Blainville CDI, plus was the double top four finisher in the Wellington FL CDI, and top five finisher at the Dressage at Devon Grand Prix CDI. In 2009, Amicelli was invited to compete at the World Masters CDI 5* in Wellington FL. That year, he was also short-listed for the Canadian Team (2008 & 2009), and received the Dressage Canada Red Scarf Athlete of the month for April 2009.

Amicelli is currently owned by Barbara Strawson and Jennifer Foulon. Barbara and everyone at TeamStrawson is excited to have such a well-rounded champion in their midst, and are looking forward to a bright future as the Strawson-Amicelli duo hit the competitive trail for 2012.

Research Now Poll Finds Canadians Mostly Undecided on 2011 CFL Grey Cup Champion

Research Now recently conducted a poll among 1,000 Canadian respondents aged 18 and over who are members of the Web Perspectives panel, to find out respondents’ opinions on which team will become the 2011 Grey Cup champion.

The poll found that most people are uncertain about the outcome of this year’s match up. When asked ‘which team do you think will win’, 39% of Canadian respondents replied that they are not sure. The percentage was far higher among women (45%) than men (22%).

The Montreal Alouettes, however, were favorites with 12% of those surveyed predicting they will come out as this year’s CFL champions. The Toronto Argonauts ranked a close second (11%), followed by the BC Lions (10%).

The remaining 5 teams ranked very similar among those surveyed: the Calgary Stampers (6%); the Saskatchewan Roughriders (6%); the Edmonton Eskimos (5%); the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5%); and the Hamilton Tiger-cats (5%). Given such close results, only history will tell who will win the 2011 CFL Grey Cup championship.

The Canadian Football League (CFL) Grey Cup is the single biggest sporting event in Canada, drawing football fans from across the country. It has long been the nation’s largest television event, attracting an impressive 6.25 million viewers last year. With less than 4 months to go, excitement and speculation over the 2011 championship game is already mounting.

This year’s Grey Cup championship will be held on November 27 at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. The city will become the hub of Grey Cup fever, hosting most of the festivities including concerts, team parties, gala events, parades and autograph sessions.

The winner of the training session with an Olympic hopeful from Corby has been announced, by his sponsors, Opus Energy. Zoe Parker, aged 8, won the training session with Gymnastics World Championship silver medallist, Daniel Keatings, plus four tickets to the European Gymnastic Championships, after entering the competition run by business energy supplier, Opus Energy.

Competition winner, Zoe Parker commented:

“I am so excited about my training session with Daniel and I get to see him compete at the European Championships too. He is a very good gymnast and I hope I can learn some new techniques from him to help with my gymnastics.”

The competition was launched by Opus Energy, to offer young gymnasts the opportunity meet a local gymnastics’ hero and to experience the world of European gymnastics first hand.

Zoe’s Senior coach, Marie Mitchell from Kettering Olympic Gymnastics Club, said:

“We are delighted that Opus Energy has created this fantastic opportunity that will inspire young gymnasts to excel in the sport. The club is thrilled at having an Olympic standard gymnast, such as Daniel run a training session with Zoe.”

Daniel is showing huge potential for the 2012 Olympics having already won Britain’s first ever medal at the men’s All Around event at the 2009 World Championships.

Despite suffering from two dislocated fingers after falling in a training routine, Daniel has been confirmed to represent Great Britain at the European Championships and is confident about team GB’s performance;

“The preparations for the Europeans have been tough. The whole team has been working really hard and hopefully we will get a place on the podium for the first time as a team at a major championship,” says Daniel.

He adds, “I am looking forward to meeting Zoe. It’s good to know I can help young gymnasts, through opportunities such as these, to achieve their aspirations to become a professional athlete.”

Opus Energy is committed to working within the Northampton community and supports many local initiatives, including, a pledge to raise £10,000 for the Friends of Cynthia Spencer Hospice.

Matchplay Championship Northern Final Above Par

Keen amateur golfers braved the March chill to take part in the seventh Northern Final of the Matchplay Championship to win a place in the Egyptian Grand Final in May.

In all, 36 teams teed-up at the Marriott Hollins Hall in the stunning Yorkshire Dales for what was to be a nail-biting finale.

It has been a record year for entries in the Matchplay Championship which is now the UK’s largest amateur golf tournament and a fixture on the golfing calendar with coverage of all the finals on Sky Sports.

The top three from the prestigious men’s pairs CONGU active handicap category make it through to the Grand Final which takes place at the five star Marriott Taba Heights Golf Resort in Egypt from May 8.

Ranked first with 40 points were newcomers to the tournament Declan Quigley and Mark McCoid, joined by Kenneth Burke and Richard Law in second place with 38 points and Kevin Butler and David Anderson taking third position.

They will be joined by mixed pair winners Karen Burns and Graham Bell who won with 37 points, and husband and wife team Karen and Peter Greene who took second place in the category with 36 points.

Non active CONGU handicap champions Patrick Turtle and Cyril Morris took top spot in their category with 38 points.

“It was a fantastic day’s golfing and there were some real nail-biting moments because the scores were so close. It made it even more competitive because Sky Sports were there to cover play and interview all the competitors,” said John Woosey, Managing Director of Golf Insurance provider, The Golfers Club which promotes the Matchplay Championship.

The Southern Regional Final will take place on Wednesday, April 14 at the Marriott St Pierre where a further 10 pairs will join the lucky northern group who have already qualified for Egypt.

Each finalist will be given international flights to Egypt, a practice fourball round of golf, seven nights’ full board accommodation at the five star Marriott Taba Heights Golf Resort and attend a lavish prize-giving gala dinner.

The Matchplay Championship also recently announced that it will be hosting its 2010-11 grand final at The Els Club, Dubai.

The venue is a major coup for the prestigious tournament which was launched in 2003 giving all golfers, whether they are members of a club or not, the chance to win a trip of a lifetime and have their progress followed by the Sky Sports cameras, all for an entry fee of just £20 per person.

Entries are now open for the 2010-11 tournament which take place on May 7-14, 2011, at the stunning course designed by Ernie Els, winner of a record seven World Matchplay titles.

They have until June 30 to enter and will then take part in regional qualifier rounds before a North and South regional final. In all 36 finalists will make it to the Dubai Grand Final, staying at the sumptuous Dubai Marriott Harbour Hotel.
