A Bold Move: 79-year old champion bodybuilder competes against 40-, 50-, 60-year olds!

Amador County, CA, May 08, 2015 — /EPR SPORTS NEWS/ — A career spanning nearly 50 years isn’t over yet for Amador County veteran bodybuilder and one of the original Mr. Venice Beach competitors, Arthur Peacock. Peacock, who is turning 80 this year, takes the stage with 40-, 50-, and 60-year olds this Saturday, May 9 at the Contra Costa Bodybuilding Championship, to be held in the Chabot College Performing Arts Theatre.

“There is no doubt that this is a career turning point for me. It’s what I’ve been training for my entire life, but especially the last three years. I’ll have 60-seconds to prove myself—my physique and my poses—with competitors between 40 and 69. That’s potentially almost 40 years younger than me.”

Peacock chose to compete in three classes for a couple of reasons—no 70s bracket existed, and he has every intention of continuing his legacy to inspire others who want to follow their bodybuilding dreams.

“I want people to see me and say, ‘I can do that. Look at that guy up there at 80.’ I want to inspire to the end; I’ve done it all my life. I’ve had world champions come up to me and say, ‘I remember when you stopped and spoke to me as a teenager, and now, 20 years later, I’m the number one guy. Thank you.’”

It was in 1965, as an already athletic young man in his early 30s, an avid swimmer, surfer cyclist, and hiker, that Peacock went as a spectator with his friends to his first bodybuilding competition. “I knew I wanted to do that—that I could do that.” And that he did, taking home his first trophy in the 1968 Mr. Venice Beach competition, which gave rise to a half-century career with more than 50 major titles earned.

As the Diamond League winds down, Walter Dix, one of America’s elite sprinters, talks of his current condition, future, and setting new goals for himself as well as the sport in the United States

“I can’t believe I stumbled like that…but thankful health is back….”, are just some of the words that Dix tweeted after his off form 100m performance in Zurich this past weekend. Though he stumbled out of the blocks, Dix was still able to recapture enough form to stop the clock at a season’s best 10.07 into a slight headwind against six of the eight 100m finalists from Moscow.

He had not raced for almost two weeks prior to Zurich as he has been training and continuing rehab from the slight strain suffered in Des Moines at USA’s. He strategically ran low-key races since then in order to test his body and rehab properly, while slowly regaining his competitive edge.

“I had to take some time to completely heal and not rush myself back to the track to soon. I just had to be patient in order to come back ready to run again. I want to show the young people who follow the sport that to do it right, it takes a little time, and patience.”

It has been a long season for the free agent, but he has been gradually building up his form and health in order to finish out the season on a positive note.

“I’m healthy now and just looking to finish the season strong and positive while having a little fun in the process. I’ve had a lot of support from family, fans and friends and I owe it to them to get back on the track ASAP!”

With the final Diamond League meeting approaching in Brussels this Friday, September 6th, Dix looks to continue his comeback trail.

“We hope to compete in Brussels, Rieti, and probably shut it down until next year. He has been hard at work this season, building his body up, taking stock of the direction that the sport and its athletes must go towards not only for the fans, but also the sport itself. He’s a fighter and anybody who really knows Walt, knows that he doesn’t give up easily at all” said his brother Washington. “We set out a plan for this season, and Ibelieve, given the circumstances faced throughout the season, Walter will ultimately get the job done!”

In support of World Diabetes Day, Harvey Norman’s Connected Fitness team research reveals that 280 Australians develop diabetes every day

In support of World Diabetes Day (14 November), Harvey Norman’s Connected Fitness team carried out a detailed research project to uncover the extent of Australia’s type 2 diabetes problem. The worrying results indicate that an estimated 1.7 million Australians suffer from type 2 diabetes today, with up to half of these cases currently undiagnosed. Reports from The World Health Organisation indicate that the total number of diabetic Australians is expected to increase to 3.3 million by 2031, creating a healthcare timebomb for the country. Diabetes can significantly impact the quality of life and life expectancy of its sufferers. Some of the potential health complications caused by the disease include kidney damage, heart disease and stroke, loss of vision, and foot ulcers leading to limb amputation. Spanish finalists of the BMW Golf Cup International qualify at PGA Catalunya Resort

Jesús Aguinaga, Luis Mena and Patricia Domínguez Arburua were triumphant in their respective categories in the National Final of the BMW Golf Cup International, which took place at the PGA Catalunya Resort. These three players will now represent Spain in the World Final in South Africa.

The BMW Golf Cup International 2012 held its National Final on Saturday 6th October at the PGA Catalunya Resort. Finalists who qualified in 12 local trials held throughout the season across Spain travelled to the resort.

The spectacular “Stadium” golf course at the PGA Catalunya Resort, named best golf course in Spain in the “100 best golf courses where you can play” list in British magazine Golf World, proved to be a difficult test for competitors, none of whom were able to go under the course par.

The winner in the first category was Jesús María Aguinaga, representing Lurauto, from Gipuzkoa, who with a score of 76 strokes was able to beat his closest competitors by four strokes. In the second category, Madrid’s Luis Mena, representing Ibericar Cuzco Motor, did the same and with 75 strokes he also beat his closest competitors by 4 strokes. The most hard-fought of the day was the ladies catgeory, where Patricia Domínguez Arburua achieved a birdie on the 18th to claim victory with the least strokes.

These three players now have the honour of representing Spain in the World Final, taking place in March in South Africa, where they will face winners from the other 45 countries. Three places will be at stake to play the previous Pro-Am at the Open BMW International which will take place in Munich (Germany) during the Summer of 2013.

Dan Konyk wins Spain’s first RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship at PGA Catalunya Resort

Attended by throngs of spectators, PGA Catalunya Resort hosted golf’s big-hitters from across the globe for RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship, including 2010 World Champion Joe Miller, fellow Brit Dan Konyk, Gerrard Pera – the first Spaniard to take part in a World Championship and 2011 Rookie of the year, – and Swedish sensation, Jorgen Trank.

SportsMark selects WinMagic Encryption technology to protect critical data at London 2012 Olympic Games

WinMagic Inc., the global innovator in disk encryption, today announced SportsMark has chosen WinMagic’s SecureDoc data security and encryption software to protect sensitive corporate hospitality program data for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Of the many events SportsMark will be involved in this year, including Super Bowl, The Masters, and the America’s Cup World Series, the London 2012 Olympic Games will be a pinnacle event. SportsMark has been preparing for this momentous event for over four years, working side by side with its clients to create unparalleled guest experiences and optimize their brand building and sales objectives. SportsMark’s clients will host more than 45,000 guests throughout the Olympic and Paralympic Games, working with a staff of over 1,000 and managing tens of thousands of Olympic event tickets on behalf of their 15 clients.

SportsMark’s information services team determined that they required a rapid OS and encryption deployment ready for a highly mobile and diverse workforce to securing log in onto any of their laptops at any of the locations.

“WinMagic SecureDoc was clearly the answer to our requirements,” said Scott Shuemake, systems engineer at SportsMark. “We needed an encryption solution that we could quickly and easily implement, manage centrally and provide all temporary staff with access to all the devices, so we had the flexibility to move staff around the hospitality venues across London, sometimes at short notice.”

SportsMark Group has contracted 1000 temporary hospitality event staff to work for the duration of Olympic and Paralympic Games in more than 15 pop-up offices around central London. These staff will be supplied with rented laptops that require the hard drive to be fully encrypted.

The technical solution consisted of 300 temporary licenses of WinMagic SecureDoc and SecureDoc Enterprise Server to install the SecureDoc packages and provide recovery. SportsMark also utilized WinMagic consultancy services to ensure the smoothest and quickest deployment in the fastest possible timeframe. At the end of the project, SportsMark will take advantage of SecureDoc’s Crypto erase feature to decommission the devices used for the event.

Longboarding For Peace In The Middle East

A unique peace building initiative will take place throughout the month of July, bringing the joys of longboard skateboarding to children and teens in Israel and the West Bank (Palestinian Authority).

The Search-Spark-Stoke Tour 2012, created by Michael Brooke, publisher of Concrete Wave Magazine, will teach as many as 200 children and teens in Israel and the West Bank how to longboard while establishing relationships between the Israeli and Palestinian participants. This initiative, which will include events held in both Israel and the West Bank, is being organized as part of the Surfing 4 Peace project with events hosted by Israel’s premiere youth peacebuilding organization, the Peres Center For Peace.

The unique approach and programming of the Search-Spark-Stoke combines Michael Brooke’s 37 years of skateboarding experience with the programmatic expertise of Explore Corps, the parent company of Surfing 4 Peace.

“Longboarding is exploding in popularity. It’s fun and easy to learn” explains Brooke.”Not everyone lives near surf and learning to ride can be a challenge. Longboards are much easier to learn than regular street skateboards and you don’t need to live by the sea to feel the thrill of the ride.”

According to Surfing 4 Peace leader Arthur Rashkovan, “We have made great gains in building ties between surfers across political and cultural borders in the past few years. Expanding our programming to include longboarding was a natural progression. We can include more people, and longboard when there are no waves.”

The Search-Spark-Stoke Tour 2012 will consist of four events in the cities of Jaffa, East Jerusalem, Jericho and Sderot. Instruction will be provided by Michael Brooke and a team of volunteers from Surfing 4 Peace. Each session will host 30-50 local youth participants selected by the Peres Center For Peace. At the events, youth will learn to longboard following a curriculum developed by Michael Brooke and Explore Corps. When Search-Spark-Stoke Tour 2012 concludes, 30 longboards and helmets will be donated to Explore Corps for use in future Surfing 4 Peace programming in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Kick Racism Out Of Soccer

United, formed in 2011 following the amalgamation of Coral Springs Storm and Coral Springs Renegades, are teaming up with Kick It Out and the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, south Florida’s only professional men’s soccer team, to host the inaugural One Game, One Community Trophy on June 2.

The Trophy, which will be competed for annually in a one-off game between United’s two under-14s teams, is set to take place prior to Lauderdale’s North American Soccer League fixture against the Tampa Bay Rowdies at the Lockhart Stadium.

The youngsters will be supporting Kick It Out by conducting a flag display and donningOne Game, One Community t-shirts before the match at the 18,500-seater arena – a historical venue where football legends George Best, Gerd Mueller, Gordon Banks and Teófilo Cubillas have all previously featured.

Having established the partnership between Kick It Out and United, Spencer Freedman, who acts as the under-14s assistant coach and parent liaison manager, is looking forward to the occasion. Olympic Fever Drives 165% Increase in Members for London Social Sports Club

The sports club, who run leagues at over 20 venues across London, have opened 10 new leagues already in 2012 to cope with the demand of a 165% uplift in new members compared to the same period last year. At least another 20 more new leagues are expected before the end of the year.

Luke Mohr, founder and MD of Go Mommoth explains;

“In the last 6 months we’ve seen a huge increase in demand for our sports leagues across the board – when we ask new members what made them want to join there’s obviously a myriad of responses from getting fit to meeting new people but a huge number are also telling us that the increasing buzz of the Olympics has inspired them to go out and get active, rather than just heading straight to the pub when 5:30 comes.”
