Warning For Golfers As Player Awarded £400k After Losing Eye

Leading UK golf insurance specialist Golf Care has urged players to ensure they take out sufficient protection before stepping onto the course.

The warning comes after a Scottish court ordered a golfer and a golf club to pay damages of almost £400,000 following an accident which led to an amateur player losing an eye after being struck by a ball.

A judge at the Court of Session in Edinburgh ruled on Friday that 44-year-old Anthony Phee from Sale, Greater Manchester, should receive £397,000 in damages – 30 per cent of which will be paid by Niddry Castle Golf Club at Winchburgh, in West Lothian, where the incident took place and 70 per cent by the golfer who struck the wayward shot.

The case has highlighted the importance of individual golfers having specialist golf insurance which covers them for eventualities such as this that can potentially occur on the golf course.

John Woosey, managing director of Golf Care, said: “It’s worrying that nine out of 10 golfers aren’t adequately covered when they step on the course. Mr Phee’s case proves that accidents happen and can cost golfers a fortune.”

The UK’s leading specialist golf insurance provider, Golf Care, offers policies that would have covered the liable golfer for this sort of incident which left the visiting player with only one eye after he was struck by a wayward tee-shot.

Mr Woosey added that in many cases, golfers think their home insurance will cover them for damage or personal liability, but the truth is that an inexpensive specialist golf insurance policy is the best way to ensure that individual golfers are adequately covered.

He said: “This sort of incident highlights just how dangerous a golf course can be, and a pay-out of £397,000 is a staggering amount.”

“The vast majority of golfers don’t realise how easy it is to compare golf insurance and aren’t properly covered. But whether you’re a single figure
handicapper or a golfing novice, we all hit poor shots. Why take the risk when for less than £30 a year you can be fully covered for incidents such as this – a small fee to pay for peace of mind every time you step onto the course.”

Big Names Advance In The Matchplay Championship

Celebrities, defending champions, and past winners emerge unscathed from the first round of the UK’s biggest amateur golf tournament.

The highly-anticipated first round of the Matchplay Championship, the UK’s biggest amateur golf tournament, has come to a close with some familiar names emerging unscathed to book their place in the next round of the prestigious event. Reigning Men’s Pairs Champions Andy Castell and Andy Billson from Collingtree Park, plus last year’s Mixed Pairs winners Paul Fell and Joanne Beddows of Clays Golf Club, are two of the teams to advance and move a step closer to the Sky Sports televised Grand Final in Dubai. It won’t be an easy passage for Castell and Billson in the Men’s Pairs event however, as the likes of England Rugby World Cup winning Head Coach Sir Clive Woodward and his partner Peter Yates of the British Olympic Association are also still in the running.

“As the biggest event in tournament history, we’re obviously thrilled to see some of the seasoned campaigners emerging. However, there are a lot of new faces ready to knock them off their perch,” commented John Woosey, Managing Director of The JRW Group. “Having the likes of Sir Clive and Peter involved, speaks volumes about the calibre of the event and validates our position as one of the leading amateur golf tournaments in Europe.”

The second-round draw has been made and thrown up a host of interesting match-ups when play commences on Monday the 26th September. None more so than the Mixed Pairs tie between 2011 champions Fell and Beddows and 2009 Winners Steve Aylott and Lesley Mifsud. Other notables in the draw include the top-3 from last year’s Men’s Pairs championship, including runners-up Chris Scott-Douglas and Mike Ankers from The Midlands, as well as the third-placed team of Shaun Welch and Elliot Bates of Broke Hill GC, Kent. The top-3 finishers from last year’s Mixed Pair’s event also remain, in the shape of Mike Perry and Samantha Hill from Isle of Purbeck, and the husband and wife pairing of Barry and Fanny King from Wimbledon.

The ultimate goal for the competitors is a place in the Grand Final where they’ll be whisked off to enjoy 7-nights luxurious accommodation at the Dubai Marriott Courtyard Hotel and four rounds of golf at the world-renowned Els Club. The once-in-a-lifetime prize is on offer to the 40 competitors who make it out of the Regional Finals in March, which are held at two prominent Marriott venues in the UK.

With five GreenFree 2-for-1 golf vouchers, free golf lessons, free registration to the Strokes Golf Handicap and Game analysis, online video tips from Master PGA Professional Scott Cranfield, and vouchers for Your Golf Travel also included, The Golfers Club has an unmatched array of membership benefits. On the 15th when Andy hit it in the hazard but amazingly the ball was playable and he managed to got it greenside. He ended up chipping it in for a birdie and four points, which took us into the lead.

GreenFree member clubs acknowledge the sales opportunity and marketing support offered by the UK’s premier 2-for-1 golf scheme

GreenFree, the home of 2-for-1 golf, has been lauded by leading golf clubs for the additional income that it helps generate for clubs across the UK and Ireland. With many golf clubs looking at ways to generate additional income in a difficult economic environment, and some experiencing declining membership numbers, GreenFree has been recognised for bringing in additional revenue through attracting visiting golfers with the offer of half price green fees at selected times.

A recent survey of over 16,000 golfers showed that GreenFree voucher users bring in an additional £36 per person on average in the golf shop and clubhouse, over and above the green fee. With the average green fee at nearly £29, that works out at around £65 per person, or £130 per 2-ball.

“Our association with GreenFree has enabled us to develop an important additional green fee revenue stream,” noted Iain Burns, Director of Golf, Marriot Forest of Arden Hotel & Country Club.

“Being listed as a GreenFree venue and benefiting from the marketing activity has definitely increased Mottram Hall’s visibility on a national basis,” commented Tim Hudspith, Director of Golf, De Vere Mottram Hall. “There is no doubt that this has given us a competitive advantage locally when it comes to attracting visitors from a wider catchment area.”

Brian Connor, Head Professional Manchester Golf Club also added, “The beauty of the GreenFree scheme is that we have generated traffic on the days and times when the bulk of the membership doesn’t tend to play. The scheme allows us to set the rules so we are maximising our inventory without upsetting our members – a great win-win situation.”

Around 950 courses are available to GreenFree voucher holders, all of whom receive free marketing exposure via GreenFree’s website, directory and extensive email database. Much of the scheme’s success is based on member golf clubs being able to set their own restrictions, making it possible for traditional clubs to maintain their exclusivity. Certain times of the day or days of the week can be highlighted for GreenFree users, ensuring little disruption to the members’ experience and therefore a win/win for golfers and clubs alike.

A resounding success amongst golfers and golf clubs, GreenFree looks set to go from strength to strength in the coming season.

Golf Care, the UK’s largest provider of specialist golf insurance, has sponsored Cheadle Golf Club’s ‘Quasquicetennial’ golf challenge to celebrate its 125th anniversary and raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The ’Golf Care Trophy’ will be presented to the winners of the historic club’s challenge against Hesketh Golf Club, which is also celebrating the same milestone this year.

The first leg of the two part mixed greensome challenge took place on Thursday, July 8, where Cheadle led Hesketh six games to two. The second leg will take place at Hesketh in September at a date to be announced.

“We are delighted to sponsor such a fantastic club as Cheadle which is right on our doorstep and at the same time help raise money for such a worthy cause as the Alzheimer’s Society,” said Golf Care Commercial Director, Colin Whitehead.

“It’s intriguing to think when the home of the ‘Golf Care Trophy’ is decided in September, will someone, in another 125-years time, get it out of the display cabinet, dust it off and think about that inaugural match all those years ago,” he added.

Set up in 1885 by the Milne family who owned Kendal Milne department store, the club is the second oldest club in Cheshire and boasts a popular clubhouse as well as club PGA professional Anthony Millar.

Captain Ian Haig has chosen the Alzheimer’s Society as his charity in its‘Quasquicetennial’ year and is aiming to raise £1,250 throughout the year. And the club has received a letter of support from the Queen for their fund raising efforts on such a special anniversary.

“We are extremely grateful to have Golf Care on board sponsoring the challenge in what is such a historic year for the club,” he said.

“They are one of the most respected golfing brands in the UK and we are thrilled that they have backed us in our celebrations and fund-raising.”
